Making A Shower Curtain Top

If your budget is an issue, but you want a little splash of color for your bath; making a shower curtain top may be your answer. You can use your existing Crescent shower curtain or purchase a new one. A mildew resistant vinyl shower curtain is economical and resists mold and mildew. It would be a good choice if you are going to purchase a shower curtain for this project.

Materials you will need:

Hint: Read all instructions before beginning.

• Scissors

• Washable marker or fabric chalk

• Shower curtain of your choice

• One to two yards of fabric you have chosen. You can be creative here.

Examples I have seen used include: a bright purple vinyl shower curtain with a sponge bob patterned fabric shower curtain top, a bright green or clear shower curtain with a john deer tractor pattern fabric shower curtain top, a lace shower curtain top over a clear vinyl shower curtain with a lace overlay. These are all very decorative. You should pick a fabric pattern that suits your bathroom décor.

• Needle and thread or a sewing machine. Unless you hand sew well, I would recommend a machine. You can also use one of the fabric glues that are on the market. They work well for a shower curtain top.

• Aluminum grommets (available at craft stores) if you want to use them.

Steps to make your shower curtain top:

• Measure the distance from end to the other of your shower curtain rod.

Add 12 inches if you don’t want to gather your shower curtain top; 24 inches if you do.

• Take the measurement and measure the length of fabric for your shower curtain top.

• Decide how far you want your shower curtain top to hang over your shower curtain.

• Add 3 inches to the measurement and cut the fabric to your desired size

• Fold the ends over ½ inch and either sew or glue the hem.

• Fold over the top 2 inches and sew or glue

• Repeat the above procedure for the bottom of your shower curtain top. You will only fold over one inch for the bottom hem.

• You are now ready to put the holes in for the rings. You can either cut a slit and make a button hole or you can use grommets. Grommets are easy and make a very durable ring hole.

• You can now hang your shower curtain top on the rings. This would be a good time to consider adding shower curtain pockets to your shower curtain. You already have all the materials. You can use the left over fabric from the shower curtain top to make shower curtain pockets. Simply cut squares to create a Pocket Shower Curtain. You want to double the fabric for your shower curtain pockets. Using a marker or chalk; mark where you want the shower curtain pockets to go on your shower curtain.

• Double stitch the shower curtain pockets onto your shower curtain.

You have now added some color with a shower curtain top and some extra storage with your shower curtain pockets.
